Addressing sex outside of marriage

(Kelsey Gaston) #1

Is sex outside of 1 man and 1 woman married (sleeping together when not married, adultery, homosexuality) evil, and if it is, how are christians to address it with friends? God says hate what is evil and cling to what is good. Is this something we should hate? What does this look like?

@cajunrig Below are some thoughts, verses, threads and videos from Tim Keller. I think if it depends on whether or not your friends claim to be Christian or not.

  • a life of self-control is better than a life of slavery to your passions - true freedom is not being a slave your passions
  • as Christians, we set ourselves apart for God that His Spirit may dwell in us - our body is not our own, we have been bought with a price
  • sex is only temporary - the joy Christ offers is eternal - there is no sex in Heaven
  • sex without commitment dehumanizes the other person

Jude 1:23 - save others by snatching them from the fire; to others show mercy, mixed with fear–hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.

2 Timothy 2:20-22 - Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for honorable use, some for dishonorable. 21 Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work. 22 So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.

1 Cor 6:12-20 - “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. 13 You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.” The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.” 17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.

18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
