An Old Song worth remembering through your day

(Steve Kell) #1

Higher Ground: let this be a prayer, and also a praise because of the hope we have in God in Christ! We can always be lifted, our eyes and our spirits, to higher ground:

1
I’m pressing on the upward way,
New heights I’m gaining every day;
Still praying as I onward bound,
“Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”
Lord, lift me up, and let me stand
By faith on Canaan’s tableland;
A higher plane than I have found,
Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.
2
My heart has no desire to stay
Where doubts arise and fears dismay;
Though some may dwell where these abound,
My prayer, my aim, is higher ground.
3
I want to live above the world,
Though Satan’s darts at me are hurled;
For faith has caught the joyful sound,
The song of saints on higher ground.
4
I want to scale the utmost height
And catch a gleam of glory bright;
But still I’ll pray till rest I’ve found,
“Lord, lead me on to higher ground.”

Johnson Oatman Jr. 1898
Repeated for emphasis and praise
Praying as I’m onward bound, “Lord plant my feet on higher ground!”. Yes Lord!!!
My heart has no desire to stay where doubts arise and fears dismay; though some may dwell where these abound MY PRAYER, MY AIM is higher ground! LORD LIFT ME UP, and help me stand, by faith on Heaven’s table land, a higher plane than I have found; LORD, Plant my feet on higher ground!

May it be true for us in prayer and in deed that he has planted us on higher ground, daily higher!

@skell It’s very interesting the way this song mixes Old Testament imagery with New Testament promises - specifically ‘Canaan’s tableland’ is used to refer to spiritual high ground. The persistence to seek a ‘gleam of glory bright’ is inspiring - O Lord, let us see Thy face!
