Can't get this sentence

I’m struggling to understand what the highlighted part of this small paragraph means in relation to the authenticity of Jesus’s resurrection.

@LKHHKL That sentence simply means that because the Gospels were written so close to the time that Jesus lived, if they had contained false information people who knew Him would have been alive to repudiate those claims. However, since those who were alive to see Jesus did not repudiate those claims, we can trust that the information was generally accepted as accurate by those who actually knew Jesus.
