The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many.

This is a Fascinating verse. Are there any parallel verses? It’s a mystery, why did they resurrect when Jesus died?

This sure is a powerful verse, I love it! My understanding has always been that Jesus’ resurrection was such a violent event against death that it caused some bodies recently put in tombs to be resurrected. It is interesting to note that these were saints, i.e. believers.

I do not know of any cross references. Something like Isaiah 26:19 would be the closest, that I am aware of but I believe this and all of the others are pointing to the final resurrection of the saints (Daniel 12:2, Hoseah 13:14, Isaiah 25:8 and 1 Cor 15).

If you are interested in reading more about the resurrection, I highly recomment N.T. Wright’s work, in particular his book, Surprised by Hope.
