Since the creation of the world

Before we took our first breath we had names declared over us: overcomer, cherished, highly favoured, courageous and strong- to name a few! These names are not based on our feelings or circumstances but are truths etched into the pages of our story, today and throughout eternity. Any name less than these slanders our real identity as children of God, and that is something we must never forget. Know his banner over you as love this day.

Could we even say BEFORE the foundation of the world this was worked out? See Matthew 25. 34

Or was it SINCE the creation of the world?

Biblical thoughts, please.

Very good question, @Ame - and more important than may appear at first glance!

I believe the phrase from the foundation of the world means “since”, not “before”. I realize that predestinarians will tend to disagree, but I believe such disagreement is being driven by theology more than the normal meaning of English words.

But even if the phrase did mean “before” the foundation of the world, it would still be speaking of a “group”, not “individuals”. Anyone can freely respond to Christ’s invitation and become a part of that wide-open group of overcomers for whom the kingdom was always intended.

I hope this will help with your question.

“even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blemish before him in love:”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭1:4‬ ‭ASV‬‬

“and all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain.”
‭‭Revelation‬ ‭13:8‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,”
‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭1:9‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭1:4‬ ‭ESV‬‬

If I were to cast my vote I’d say our names were chosen “before time began”. God is omniscient and all things were known before the foundation of the world. It is beautiful to think on these things. Thank you for this post @Ame.

Interesting how small words within certain contexts mean different things to different people! Makes the whole process of understanding the meaning of the passage richer.

I looked through all the English translations on Biblegateway and from that most of them use “from the foundation.” Some say “from the creation of…” a few “since the creation of…” In Swedish translations the terms “since the beginning of the world” is common, and one read “ever since the beginning of the world.”

Personally I’m not sure I can distinguish any difference in intent. None of them say “before the beginning of…” When was the world “founded” - when it actually materialised, or when God conceived of it? Whatever the exact moment, it was an awful long time ago, certainly long before we ourselves -as individuals of as a group, a community of believers were born.

I think Carrie H’s references are very appropriate, and I full agree with her final paragraph! :slightly_smiling_face:
