What is salvation history?

(Jimmy Sellers) #1

I have run into the use of this term on more than one occasion. I have always assumed that it must refer to the inevitability of Messiah appearing on the pages of human history as the final chapter of God great plan. I have also seen it used as referring to the church as being the instrument of ushering in the Kingdom and in a secular vain “Man” as the instrument of saving a failing and endangered planet.
How do you understand the term Salvation history?

@Jimmy_Sellers My personal understanding is that the term ‘salvation history’ simply refers to how God has been working to achieve the salvation of mankind throughout history - from His promise to Adam of a seed, to Abraham, to Israel and King David, to Messiah, the Church and eventually to the redemption of all Creation.

Salvation history (German: Heilsgeschichte ) seeks to understand the personal redemptive activity of God within human history to affect his eternal saving intentions. -D. A. Carson
